Format XP external drive in W8

Hi, not sure if this is in the right place.
I have a new PC with Windows 8.
I had an old PC with XP.
I took the HD (Hitachi Deskstar Aug 2007 3.5 inch) out of the old machine to use as an external drive with my new machine.
The old HD is partitioned into two drives.
I put the old HD in a caddy (Dynamode USB-HD3.5SI-BN), jumpers set to Master.
I thought I might be able to format it from W8.
But when I connect it via USB all I get is repeated connected and disconnected sounds.
No drive letter displayed, just sounds.
Is there any way I can format this drive from within W8?
If not, do I just take it to an engineer and ask him/her to sort it?
