Acer Windows 8.1 issues waking up/restarting

My Acer Aspire V5 laptop (Windows 8.1) has been having problems waking from sleep mode the last few months. The computer wakes up with the fan running, keyboard lights on, etc, but the screen doesn't turn on. If I have a second monitor plugged in, then the second monitor occasionally will run as the main screen upon start up while the laptop screen is black. Sometimes the screen will display the "Acer" initial startup screen and then go black.

Manual restart of the computer will sometimes work after several restarts. I do a power drain if this doesn't work (turn off computer, unplug, remove battery, hold down on/off button for ~1 min, replace battery, plug in computer, turn on). Most of the time this allows the computer to turn back on normally.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this happens so I can attempt a permanent fix? Is there residual power left or static in the hardware that causes the screen to malfunction? I use my laptop for work, so am constantly transporting it back and forth in sleep mode so I can leave applications open.
