Asus pc can't play new DVD's

Merry Christmas to every one....

I have a new Asus laptop, ( not sure if it is a Notebook or a PC, I don't know difference), well under a year old. When I got it new, it was a Windows 8 and after constant cajoling I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
My problem is I can't play NEW dvd's. It plays old grungy dvd's like these weird ones someone left at my place without normal print, all white. Said he bought them off a Chinese gentleman. Anyway, the point is, these DVD,s, as well as my older ones, up to 5 years old all play perfectly okay. I just select," This PC" and double click "E" drive and ASUS DVD is selected and I've always been able to play most everything. But the new Ape movie wouldn't play same as Rise of planet of Apes wouldn't play. I just get a small window saying, "Insert a disc into drive E", when one is already loaded.
After a bit of research on internet, I went to control panel and clicked on Auto Play and tinkered the different options, not that they really meant very much, I tried different options but got nowhere.
Would it be anything to do with that little thing that says, "Copy protected". Not that I want to copy anything, I just want to watch DVD movies while I am bed ridden.
If there is a way round this, I would love to know how.
thank you very much,
django47 (Michael Sullivan).
