Catastrophic system crash after update

Hey, first time posting here and doing so because I no longer trust the support I can get from microsoft itself these days.

Alright long story short I had this Lenovo laptop for the better part of 5 months, store bought with a host of custom features installed (cloud memory, things like that) that I was talked into getting. I wanted a decent laptop that could take alot of punishment as I do quite a bit of gaming inbetween work.

Now I won't list you my woes with trying finangle windows 8, I made my bed so I decided to lie in it and simply put up with the fact that I spent 800 quid on a laptop that struggled with the graphical intensity of Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

I had been pestered for a while by the automatic update to update to the latest version of windows, which I ignored until it all but forced me to update it (as you do).

Worked fine for a day or so although I didn't really notice any changes, then while in a conversation on skype while playing a game (I had a word document and google chrome open if that matters), my computer locked up hard, couldn't move my mouse and the last thing my friend said to me over skype was stuttering on repeat every milisecond in a really aggravating staccato noise.

My computer was entirely unresponsive so I did a cold restart by pressing down on the off button until the computer restarted. I know you aren't supposed to do that and its bad for the computer but I really had no option but to do so. Once it restarted I got the usual Lenovo start up screen... which promptly faded to black and replaced by the same Lenovo startup screen telling me to wait patiently while it gets 'started', I then wasted two hours watching windows getting reinstalled onto my laptop by itself, I had no option to do so and I was terrified of restarting my computer again in case it would wipe everything.

Fortunately, when all was said and done all my files and goods were there, lesson learned I moved everything of value to my dropbox, just in case. Fortunately everything is perfectly functional... except you know now I am missing my cloud storage I paid somewhere in the region of a hundred pounds for, the search function has weirded out and expanded and several other apps are missing but for the life of me I can't tell you which ones. No big loss there at least, I never used them much.

The biggest problem I found is apparently graphical as I can no longer run any of my games. No biggie, must be a game problem right? Just reinstall everything. Except that doesn't seem to be working, I checked my graphics cards and they have their drivers up to date, everything else on the laptop seems functional including sound, things like minecraft work but I suspect that had to do with javascript somehow.

I tried to do a system restore but the option is greyed out, probably meaning I have no points to restore to which I am almost certain I did. I checked the update history for my windows and it gives the date it was activated originally but says there has never been any system update, which is blatant lies.

At this point I am no longer angry, just tired, I want to know what happened and what I can do to prevent it and if possible fix whatever the hell this update broke with my drivers/graphics/whatever is keeping me from my usual distractions.

Can anyone help? Do you need any detailed information to do so?
