How to change the total HDD size to be smaller?

Hello,
I have a 1TB hdd that I want to use in the DVD drive bay (Lenovo Z50). After talking with Lenovo tech support the drive bay can not handle a hdd as large as 1TB. I need to make the computer think that the hdd in the dvd drive bay is smaller then 1TB.
Whats the best way to do this? I did try to partition the drive into two section still did not work.
