and I have similar sympton... on a dell 660 reset time and date cannot be changed from the date that existed when everything quit working. Reset flash drive is not recognized.. system restore will not restore to a date earlier than the one that existed when the pc quit. desktop icons, pictures etc are all there.. but no changes can be made to the pc apparently... any clues.. I took it to a repair store, left it for a short time and picked it up, the cost for repairs being excessive.. I opened it up at home and saw the two short cables unplugged that went to the usb slot and dvd drives..I hooked them back up and the dvd works, but not the usb... possible one of those shot cables is bad???
