HI, This is not a question about any problem but I am posting this story so this could possibly save someone a lot of trouble
Please read patiently...This a long article/story but I am sure its useful
1. I decide to install windows 8.1 X64:
My Hardware config was: core2duo processor, Asrock Intel G41 chipset board, 2 X 4Gb DDR3 800Mhz RAMs, ATI Radeon HD5450 1GB Graphics card, a WD 500GB HDD, a secondary Seagate 3TB HDD.
Was using windows 8 pro X64 installed on my WD 500gb wihtout problem and using my 3TB seagate as a backup drive for all my music, movies and photos etc.
Then my 3tb HDD crashed and my windows 8 won't access the disk and eventually stopped detecting it even though BIOS detected it.
1st Solution: I booted my PC from a usb stick using Live Ubuntu and was able to copy almost 50% of my data fromt he 3TB.
SO I gave it for replacement.. and I don't know why..for since I was already taking backup and all I decided to Install Windows 8.1 and do a clean Install on My WD 500GB.
It did not work..
Stage1: i tried Installing windows 8.1 Pro X64 from a dvd I burned from the downloaded ISO and the setup gave me an I/O error immediately after starting. I found out my dvd writer was problematic..so I disconnected it.
Stage2: I created a bootable 8.1 USB Kingston drive. And tried installing windows 8.1.
It gave me "Bad or missing file error" at "Expanding files" stage..
Since I had deleted the old C Drive from my hard disk.. I had no installed OS to boot into.
I thought the USB drive must have errors so..
Solution1: I booted from the Live Ubuntu USB..Installed winusb and created a different USB windows bootable drive (This time a SONY)
Stage3. Again I tried installing windows 8.1 and it gave me same error..
I thought the ISO I used to create pendrive must have been corrupt
Solution2: Again I used Ubuntu/WInusb and this time created bootable pendrive using a different ISO..
Stage4: Again I tried installing windows 8.1 and again it gave me same error ..only difference was with 1st ISO setup stopped at 13% of "Expanding FIles" and with this ISO it stopped at 49%..
Then I Tried following soultions:
1. Checked RAM with Memtest.. RAM was fine..Still tried using only1 RAM stick and changing RAM sticks - Did not work.
2. Removed my ATI card - Did not work
3. Updated BIOS - Did not work
4. tried different BIOS settings - Did not work
5. Tried Formatting/Cleaning HDD using setup recovery options command prompt - Did not work
So I decided to install windows 8 again coz it was installed and running fine before - and to my horror it also gave me the same error and later I noticed WIn 7 X64 won't install either.
SOLUTION: I installed Windows 7 X86. Installed Wintoolkit. edited my windows 8.1 X64 ISO using WIntoolkit and added
my Motherboard's inf driver files and latest Intel Matrix storage drivers. Rebuilt the ISO. created the bootable pendrive.
And Windows 8.1 Pro X64 installed in 10 minutes using the same Sony pen drive and with all hardware (2 RAM sticks and ATI card) attached.
New Problem:
I installed all the latest drivers for my board, sound, graphics etc.
1. Installed latest Firefox..and noticed that it was sluggish, would hang when trying to save images.
Also I started getting Memory_Management BSOD and Updates won't install.
SOLUTION1: I uninstalled my ATI drivers. and it stopped the MEMORY_MANAGMENT BSOD and updates started installing.
Still the FIrfox problem remained.
FIREFOX ISSUE: I did following things suggested by various people first to try to solve this issue;
1. Disabeld Hardware acceleration in firefox - Did not work
2. Tried reseting Firefox - Did not work
3. Tried uninstalling all addons and stopping JAVA and Flash - Did not work
SOLUTION: I disabled Skydrive by going into Group Policy Editor and set Local Disk as default save location.
I disabled Bing from local file search.
And firefox started working smoothly and started saving images.
Another New Problem: MIcrosoft Office won't Install
I noticed I had not installed Microsoft office yet..
so first i decided to Install Office 2013 and The setup gave me error "Unable to find Proplusr.en.us/proplusww.cab" file
and gave me a dialogue box to locate file..and it won't accept the file path given even though the file was present in the setup directory.
No matter what I did I got the same error.
I decided to install Office 2010..It also gave me the same error but this time for Ms Accces file..
I tried all solutions suggested on internet but with no luck.
SOLUTION: I was trying to install Office from a directory on my Desktop..and while doingthat also listening to songs using Foobar..browsing Internet using firefox..while setup ran...
I don't know why but I decided not to do anything related to C: while the Office setup ran.
So I closed all running apps..and Ran Office setup again. And it worked.
I have also done following things to fix minor issues related to slowness of network or performance.
1. Disabled NDU service through registry.
2. Disabled built in firewall
3. Set virtual Memory to recommended size instead of Default system managed size.
So Far my Windows 8.1 is running good..
