Windows 8 update Sign on

I am thinking about updating my Windows 8 system on a Dell XPS 8700 to Windows 8.1. I've read a number of "how to's" on the Internet, and all is pretty understandable. I have one question, though: toward the end of the install the instructions mention a "sign-on to Windows" procedure using either a Windows account or a local account sign on. Currently, I don't have a password associated with this machine, and am wondering if this sign on part of the update will force me to use a Microsoft account sign on, or let me bypass this step (how?) as I currently don't use a password to sign on to Windows. Thanks for the help.
