Windows 8 and driver issue?

I have a Sony Vaio SVE1712Q1EW, bought in Feb this year. From the start, the screen would freeze momentarily and the following error message regarding the AMD Driver - 'AMD Driver has stopped working and has successfully recovered ' - would pop up. I have gone through a long process trying to resolve this - downloading AMD driver updates, doing a full system restore (following a system crash), uninstalling the driver, and eventually, on Sony Tech support advice, sending the laptop in for repair (twice). The first repair they replaced the entire hard drive, but within a day of the laptop being returned, the error message recurred. Sony appear unable to resolve this but I am wondering whether there is some kind of incompatibility with Windows 8 and this driver. Does anyone know?
