2 houses one phone line DSL windows 8

My ex husband lives about 60 feet from his parents home. They have a modem and router. I know the router is Netgear. Not sure about modem. They use Windows 7 on a tower with a router for the printer I guess. When I visited my ex, I brought my windows 7 Toshiba laptop and it worked perfectly in the 2nd house after his father gave me the SSID code. It worked in the rooms in the other house closer to the parents house. So my ex asked me buy him a computer like mine. I got a Toshiba satellite (new model, non touch screen) but it has windows 8. He tried to give it to his dad for fathers day. The man is over 75 and doesn't believe a laptop is a computer, wanted no part of it. But my ex does want it. If his dad will turn on the router like he did for me, a Netgear, will the new Win 8 Toshiba even be compatible.

Ex is 57 and living in their 2nd house due to the economy and he doesn't want to press his dad to even keep the router on. His dad believes that the router has to be unplugged everytime there is a storm since he has had one computer fried by lightning( which I believe could have been avoided by disconnecting his computer not the modem and/or router}.

He is even afraid to approach Dad to test the new Win 8 computer, but he will since I told him he cannot put a 2nd modem in the 2nd house on the same phone line. Any advice would be wonderful. They live in rural Nevada. There are no computer stores to go to within 100 miles, and I don't want to buy him a router or modem on the net, if it will not work. Of course we use his credit card.

I don't see any similar questions. Either people are trying to extend the distance of their routers in one house or at least they have the decision making power to change the configuration of the network. All he wants to do is get his new first ever computer and watch some Netflix. When I was there, I had no trouble streaming Youtube with my Toshiba laptop windows 7 form 2009. And its to late to return the new laptop to Walmart.

thanks,
Sue
