Windows 8 mail and Gmail

I use windows 8 (64 bit) and I have a gmail account. I haven't been able to get my account set up at all using the google or outlook accounts you can add via Mail. I just turned off my google+ account yesterday which some people have suggested could be the cause.
The error I get is: Unable to connect. Ensure the information you've entered is correct.
