A friend recently bought a new 17" Dell and asked me to help him set it up and transfer some files. This was my first experience with Win 8, so I did a little reading first, to have some idea what to expect.
Initially, we had a problem with the ancient Linksys Router, so we disconnected it in anticipation of a replacement and proceeded with the set up and file transfer.
After selecting the color scheme, we got to the "Connect to a Network" screen and we were stuck. There was no network, of course, but there was also no way to skip or bypass this screen. We decided to wait for the router.
The next day, we installed the router, only to find we couldn't finish the set up without out signing up for a MS email account.
I suspect I could have figured out a way around all this intrusive nonsense, but it shouldn't have been necessary.
Dell had to be in cahoots with MS for this to happen, and I see it as a very bad sign.
