Hi, I have already been working on this issue for a few days. HP Desktop running Windows 8.1 Pro, x64.
A few days ago, Netflix App stopped working. I uninstalled, then tried to reinstall from Store. Store error code 0X80070002.
Ran Windows App Troubleshooter (downloaded from Microsoft Support pages). Found 3 errors, but couldn't fix:
- Some security settings are missing or have been changed Not Fixed
- Windows Store cache may be damaged Not fixed
- Windows Store configuration may be damaged Detected
My first concern was the security settings, so I carefully checked my Update History to be sure all my security updates have been successful. I also checked to make sure all my programs/drivers were up to date using Secunia and Advanced System Care. Then I ran several scans to check for malware (MBAM, Windows Defender scan, Advanced System Care Pro). All scans were normal except one which called the HP bloatware Recipebox.exe a Trojan, so I quarantined it (I have never once used it, it came preloaded on the machine). Can a Trojan rename itself as something I've never used? Or more likely a false positive?
After everything looked clean, tried Store to install Netflix, same error, same 3 items appeared when I re-ran App Troubleshooter.
Ran Iobit Winfix tool which found no windows issues. DSKCHK found no errors. Repaired Internet Explorer (last time a Microsoft branded app was making me crazy, it was an IE issue I hadn't noticed because I use Firefox for browsing, and always forget Windows uses IE for all sorts of things).
Looked online for solutions, some folks had success with sfc /scannow run as admin, tried it and got: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
I opened the CBS log, but wasn't really able to understand the error.
So further research suggested I run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, Which completed successfully, twice, "The component store corruption was repaired."
But sfc /scannow still found errors, and App Troubleshooter errors have not changed.
I tried Chat with Microsoft Support, who asked irrelevant questions ("What was the error code you received in the App Troubleshooter" but the App Troubleshooter does not give error codes.) and said my problem was a "damaged registry issue" and "very complex" and that I better pay for premium service plan so they could fix it.
However complex it is, won't a System Refresh fix it? I'd rather not resort to that, because I don't want to have to reconfigure all my preferences. Outlook alone can take me 3 days to get working again and synching with the cloud, not to mention many Outlook preferences and settings, like color-coding and category tags, are lost with a re-install, no matter what the support people tell you.
I have an HP Recovery Drive (I think it is a partition of my primary hard drive) and some forum suggested that the partition might be causing the error.
What should I try next? I can paste the CBS log here, but it is long and I'm not sure what parts are relevant. Thanks in advance.
