I recently installed Win 8.1 and it has been giving me a lot of trouble. The biggest problem is that the machine slows down and freezes. I have managed to get the resource monitor open during the slow down/freezes and it says my RAM memory is at 99%.
Anyway, this RAM usage can spike at any time and make my computer inoperable. (it does not seem to happen when I run any particular program, from the layman's perspective it happens randomly)
I have tried a few methods of fixing this. Two of those methods I have forgotten and probably did improperly because they did not work. The last method, however, I do sort of remember. I turned off indexing (I think) and for sure I turned off superfetch.
Until I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 I never had a problem with memory usage. There is another problem that might be connected. I have iolo system mechanic and it tells me my solid state drive needs repair sometimes. The drive is new and Norton Utilities never mentions anything so I believe it to be a false positive but thought I should mention it. ( I also run the Window's internal defrag to clean up the disks every week and it never warns me of anything)
I believe I am eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10. Would that fix it and could I keep my computer set up the way it is (I don't want to reinstall everything again unless necessary). Or is Windows 10 come with its on set of problems.
Additional:
There are no error messages before this happens. I don't know what is happening until the computer slows/freezes. Also, when this goes on the light indicating my C: drive is in use goes on and stays on. It doesn't come on and then flicker a little and wait for you to do something else. It just lights up and stays solid. I have not looked for any resource messages regarding the constant operation of the C: drive so I don't know if there are any. If it happens again I will report on it.
