Hi,
I've been using this PC for 1-2 years but in recent weeks the windows explorer process starts to use a lot of CPU time, as much as 30+%. It happens when I have some programs on. I'm a Computer Science student, so I typically have Chrome, TweetDeck, a couple folders, a couple Microsoft Word docs, Adobe Reader and an IDE (varies, by recently I've been using NetBeans) on at the same time. Everything works fine normally, but over say 2-3 hours or more it can happen a few times where the taskbar lags and becomes unresponsive. Clicking buttons to switch to another program or open any menu has a long lag time, and the preview screen when I mouseover for example Microsoft Word (because I've two docs open) blacks out, as well as the taskbar itself when normally I can see my wallpaper behind the taskbar. When I try to open Task Manager sometimes the Task Manager will lag too, taking up another 30%, but the Task Manager usually drops down to 0-1% within a minute. The explorer process stays at 30+% though, and either takes a couple minutes to drop back down or only after I close all open programs. Despite this problem I am still able to work on my other programs (Word or the IDE, for example) unaffected, but if I need to see another document or program I can only access it by minimising the current window. To switch back I've to wait for the Windows Explorer lag to stop before I can reopen the minimised program, as the Alt-Tab menu doesn't appear when I press it while the lag is happening.
I've run complete scans using updated versions of Kapersky and cCleaner while disconnected from the Internet, and one adware file was removed, but the problem remains unresolved. What's causing this sudden extreme lag, and how do I fix it?
