Can't connect to internet

I turned my computer and got on the internet. I left for a minute and came back and it said it needed to update. So I clicked update now and it started updating. Then after I restart it and try to get on the internet I can't. My router name is on the network panel but when I click on it to connect it it says "this connection requires an active internet connection." I called someone and they said that something went wrong when I was updating my computer. Any suggestions on how to fix it. Also under Device Manager under the network adapters the next one down says Broadcom 802.11
