I have a new laptop I got for Christmas, an Intel Core i5 which is supposed to be a fast machine. It runs on Windows 8.1. It had the free McAfee virus checker trial on it until that expired and I loaded Avast about three weeks ago. Since then it's been like treacle. It boots up quickly but the browsers now take ages to load! I had Virgin check our broadband speed and they said it was fine, though I did a speed check and was only getting 8 mb. I read that Avast could slow down the browsers so I disabled it from both Firefox and IE but they still take a while to load and only work if I restart the laptop which is a damn nuisance.
What could be the problem? Is it Avast or Windows 8.1? My money's on Avast but it's a good virus checker
