MS Updates won't install

OS : W8.1

I have MS Updates set to download and notify but not install automatically.

This morning MS tells me that there are 21 updates available. These include Important, Recommended and updates for Office and Malicious Software Removal Tool.

I go through the updates, select them all, click "Install". Instantly MS displays a message that the updates are "Not needed".

Huh.... say that again.... not needed..?? How can updates be "Not needed"...? If they are not needed why am I being advised to install them?

Anyone else with this problem?
