Can you Install Windows 7 On New Laptop

Hi,

I bought a new Samsung laptop a couple of weeks ago with windows 8 pre-installed. I've played around with windows 8 and have decided I'm not a fan and would like windows 7. I can find tons on line re downgrading if you have previously installed 7 but can't find much if 8 is the only OS having ever been installed. I have just bought a full 7 installation disc but it won't load 7. Do I need to format the drive 8 is in before I can install 7?
