Windows 8: Did I just get unlucky?

I find this really strange.

My laptop arrives with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. Obviously it came with a lot of other HP related rubbish which I quickly removed.

The laptop was unbearably slow, with lag spikes and programs crashing. I assumed that there was a problem with the installation, so I refreshed, and still the same. The laptop was usable, but painfully.

I tried all sorts, removing software, stopping services that some people recommended stopping. Nothing would make my laptop respond any better.

Games were really laggy: Minecraft, for example, needed to be put on lowest graphics, with GameBooster and NOTHING ELSE OPEN on the pc, to make it marginally playable.

No good. I thought I'd install Windows 7 to see if it's any different.

Obviously this isn't the best PC in the world, but I kept thinking: Quad core CPU, 4 GB of RAM (not amazing, but not bad) and a good'ish graphics chipset shouldn't be behaving like this.

Windows 7 installs, after a lot of ballache, and voila, system is quick, responsive, Minecraft runs lag-free in highest graphics.

What's puzzling, is why when I search for terms such as: "Windows 8 is slow" or "Windows 7 faster than Windows 8" - everyone seems to be reporting the opposite results to what I've found
