I was moving my files from my old dual boot machine to a new one, so I plugged my old hard drive into my external drive and pulled the windows files from it using Windows 8.1. Big mistake. I found this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/38260...locking-ubuntu that states :
Since I won't be booting from that drive again, all I need to do is grab my files. However, I am completely unclear about how to assign the letter and path and I don't want to mess up the drive further. Could someone point me to a walk through on how that is done, or give me the steps on how to do it, please?
Thanks so much,

By the way... Being unable to reach Ubuntu doesn't mean you can't reach its partitions from Windows. However, you need to assign them a letter and access path using the Windows disk management utility |
