New Laptop & Windows is Flaky?

Hi everyone, looking for some advice on how to diagnose or fix some of the issues I'm having.
I've had the new computer for about a month now. Upgraded (lol) to windows 8.1 from 8

Some of the behaviors I'm dealing with are:
Flash hangs when loading randomly. Usually it will recover after 20-30 seconds (I recently updated to the most recent version hoping that would fix it but no luck)
When I try and print something windows flashes an error saying it was unable to print the document, as the printer is printing with no issue.
Yesterday trying to print anything caused that program to hang (this seems to have been resolved by rebooting the computer)

VLC is hanging randomly when trying to open a file. Usually have to wait 2-3 min and then it will work.
When watching something via VLC if the laptop is bumped the video will go strange and the audio will skip back a 5-10 seconds, before restoring to its correct position.

NUMLOCK will seemingly randomly turn itself off

The specs are:
Toshiba Qosmio A-70
i7-4700MQ CPU (2.4 GHz)
16 GB of ram
Nvidia GTX770M Graphics (as well as the intel HD 4600)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

*EDIT* I just noticed on Task Manager that the Disk usage was spiking to 99%.
Sorting by disk usage the 2 culprits (so far) have been:
windows audio device graph isolation
Service Host: Local Service (Network Restricted) (7)
