I have just finished building a new windows 8 PC to replace my old one (also windows 8)
On my old PC storage folders - My Documents, Photos. videos and so on were on a separate drive from the system one and I simply moved that drive to the new computer and set it up as the storage location in windows and the libraries.
Immediately I found that I could not access folders - on each one I got a message about permissions and a button to click to allow permissions. That was a pain but I went through each folder clicking this button and allowing permissions. However I now find that the same problem arises with some individual files even though I can access other files in the folder which means I have to go into security settings on each file and in advanced settings allowing myself access as administrator. This is playing havoc with my back up sync programme which keeps coming across files it cannot access.
Is there some way that I can globally set permissions for all folders/sub-folders and files on each of my drives without having to edit them individually? It has to do with UAC but the help on this is not particularly clear.
At the moment I am using my main account which is a system administrator however once I have the computer fully set up I want to create a login account without system administrator access - so will I need to repeat the process for this new account?
Lastly one more question - once I am using an account without System Administrator access what happens when I want to install or change something that requires permissions - am I simply prompted for the Administrator password or do I have to switch accounts each time?
Sorry about all the questions but I am fairly new to Windows 8 which I only use in desktop mode so would appreciate guidance from the desktop view (I have start8 installed) rather than the charms menu.
