windows xp appls on windows 8

Do many of Windows XP apps run OK on Windows 8? I'm talking modems, printers, etc.

Assuming windows will allow you to use a Windows XP printer, do you need updated software to use it on Windows 8 ? Is it normally available?

I'm on Windows XP, and think it may be best to go upward to Windows 8.
