Graphics problem at bootup

I have an old laptop which is supposedly incompatible with Windows7/8 (Compaq nx6325)
I upgraded to Windows7 64 bit & got everything working.
I upgraded to Windows8 64 bit with media centre & got everything working

Using these operating systems, the only compatibility issue was with the graphics (Radeon Xpress 200).
The graphics worked with every program apart from embedded clips "flash etc" on web sites played in full screen. Iplayer/Youtube etc. They worked fine played at their normal size, but if played in full screen, they crashed giving a video error - only the clips crashed, not the pc so restarts were not needed.
I accepted this problem & lived with it.

I then installed the update for Windows 8.1
The original video prob is still there, but I can live with that. But a new graphics prob has arisen which I have no explaination or fix for.
When I turn on my lappy from cold, the post graphics are shown, then the screen turns black & the cursor appears.
The pc has booted up ok apart from the login screen does not show. - it is there because when I move the cursor over where the password box should be, the cursor turns into a line for me to start typing.
I have tried entering my password at this stage so that it can get past this page - but all I get is still the black screen with the cursor.

Now the strange thing about this prob is that if I press the power button while on the black page with the cursor, the page which should be displayed flashes on then off for an instant as the pc goes into standby.
When I press the power button again to bring the pc out of standby, it starts up properly & login page etc load up correctly.
If I restart the pc, it starts correctly.
This happens every time the pc is completely shut down then started.

I have tried numerous new video drivers (not many work though)
I have tried changing any custom pics used for backgrounds etc back to the windows default ones.

Hope I have explained this prob ok & someone can help me solve it.

Thanks for any replies.

Rob
